Dakota Camacho
At 7pm for the First Friday Gallery Cruise at Spoke, Dakota will present excerpts of a work that premiered at On the Boards this past June. MALI'E |- Tåno' Uchan -|- : -|- Tåno' Dxwdwab is the unfolding of a ritual honoring Camacho's ancestral and creative lineages. "It's a really personal work," Camacho says, "It involves my family's story of surviving violent displacement, and how we maintain our cultural integrity by building relationships with other indigenous communities." $15 love offering or whatever you can give. Dakota was born in Snohomish Territory and raised in Tscha-kole-chy (Whidbey Island) within a predominantly diasporic Chamorro community. Their lineage comes from Låguas yan Gåni (the archipelago known as the Marianas Islands, and specifically the largest island known as Guåhan incorrectly pronounced as Guam by the Western world). Dakota is a product of the Seattle hip hop underground and social justice movement, discovering a life long passion and skill for rap. Attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a First Wave Hip Hop Scholar, Dakota graduated with a degree in Gender and Womens Studies while a concentration in CHamoru Studies meant a year long study abroad at the University of Guåhan. Reconnecting to their ancestral community was a pivotal life change as was participating in I Fanlalaian, an oral history research project, a traditional styled Chant group specializing in Fino Håya (a little spoken indigenous form of the language). This opened many pathways for creative potential as a Matao identifying indigenous person, realized in the creation of indigenous contemporary hip hop theatre shows, Buried Beneath: Bombs & Latte and Guåhu Guåhan . In 2016, on completion of a Masters of Performance Studies at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, Dakota founded The Matao New Performance Project and premiered FANHASSO at Festpac 2016. Dakota has been the primary composer, graphic & web designer, video editor and technician for I Moving Lab . Two years ago, Dakota released their first full-length album, Nålåla meaning give life a sonic artistic mission statement give life to ancestral knowing to give life to the world.
