Katerina Brown
The warm, honeyed voice of Katerina Brown brings a fresh flavor to the world of jazz. Russian-born and trained, influenced by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Sara Vaughan, Katerina has traveled the globe, honing her distinctive sound. She can wind her way effortlessly through a velvety rendition of an American jazz standard, or powerfully, passionately command the notes of a romantic, Russian classic. Katerina Browns artful style and lush vocals are a classic in the making.
On her debut album Mirror, vocalist Katerina Brown places songs of her native Russia alongside pieces from the Jazz repertoire. Mirror features a band with bassist/producer Gary Brown, Pianist Adam Shulman, Drummers Akira Tana and Timothy Angulo and guests including vocalist Kenny Washington, violinist Mads Tolling and the world renowned percussionist Airto Moreira.
On one level, Mirror offers an impressive introduction to a capaciously gifted singer. But Katerina Browns debut album isnt so much a career statement as a progress report from an artist who is used to wrenching Russia, and fairly recently arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is still very much between worlds, and her music draws from her past while opening up new avenues for future exploration. The project displays her gorgeous sound and stylistic range as she continues her creative journey.
Katerina Brown will be performing a CD release concert at the Sound Room in Oakland on Saturday, November 2, 2019 with a quintet composed of bassist Gary Brown, pianist Dan Zemelman, saxophonist Gary Meek, guitarist Ricardo Peixoto, and drummer Jason Lewis and special guest Kenny Washington
