Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by George Furth Directed by Rich Gray Music Direction by Nathan Young
An individual facing an impending 35th birthday struggles to come up with a wish to make as they blow out the birthday candles surrounded by a group of married friends. At a turning point in life this person who has thus far walked a solitary path faces the imperative to come to terms with either being happy as they are, or seeking a romantic partner. Over a series of dinner parties, first dates, and thoughtful conversations, our central character attempts to understand what marriage and commitment mean in their own life. When it premiered in 1971, Company received both the Drama Desk and Tony Awards for Best Musical, Book, Score and Lyrics.
Composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim and librettist George Furth also collaborated on the musical Merrily We Go Along and the drama Getting Away with Murder. Sondheim has also written music and/or lyrics for other great musicals, including West Side Story, Gypsy, Into the Woods, Follies, A Little Night Music, Assassins, Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George.
