My Crazy My Love
The Sublime Theater kicks off its second year of productions with Associate Artistic Director John Crutchfield's "My Crazy My Love," a domestic phantasmagoria with song and dance, with music by Holiday Childress, choreography by Artistic Associate Kristi DeVille, and direction by Producing Artistic Director Steven Samuels. The production plays Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 P.M., November 7-23, at The BeBe Theatre in downtown Asheville.
In "My Crazy My Love," all the world's a stage and every family's a dramatis personae in which the roles are all miscast. Crutchfield says his latest play-with-music "tells the comic story of one family's failure to know itself. Only the impending death of the patriarch can offer some hope of eleventh hour self-recognition and redemption. Or not. Whatever."
The Crutchfield-Samuels collaboration has been going on for 10 years now, and has resulted in such works as the award-winning "The Songs of Robert," "Ruth," "The Labyrinth," "Landscape with Missing Person," "Malverse," and, most recently, "TRNZ," with which they successfully launched The Sublime in November of last year. The show stars Kathy O'Connor and Samuels as a mismatched couple; Olivia Stuller, Lydia Congdon, and Emmaleigh Moriniti as three mismatched sisters; and Julian Vorus and Art Moore as mismatched friends. Rachel McCrain assistant directs.
"It's a privilege and a delight to work on John's plays," Samuels says. I never know what to expect, except for rich characters, extraordinary language, great wit, and constant surprise. This time out, we get the additional pleasure of music composed by Holiday Childress, one of the finest singer-songwriters around. The music itself, in more styles than I can name, is as exciting and inventive as everything else about 'My Crazy My Love.' Not to be missed!"
