She Loves Me
Chances are you have not seen the 1937 play Parfumerie, by Miklós László, but chances are excellent you know the story, since the play inspired not just one but two classic movies: Ernst Lubitschs The Shop Around the Corner, starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, and Nora Ephrons Youve Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The taletwo co-workers who share their mutual antipathy with secret correspondents who turn out to be well, you know the restwas also transformed into an under-appreciated 1963 Broadway musical, She Loves Me, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Bock, just one year before the two of them set an entire shtetl dancing the high-steppe in Fiddler on the Roof.In this case of mistaken identity and letter writing, two feuding perfume clerks have no idea that they are in love. An intimate and touching show, She Loves Me was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. The 1993 Broadway revival won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and the 1994 Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, we meet shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who, more often than not, don't see eye to eye. After both respond to a "lonely hearts advertisement" in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. Join Amalia and Georg to discover the identity of their true loves... and of all the twists and turns along the way! She Loves Me showcases a small but strong ensemble cast playing a range of memorable characters of all ages. This Christmas show, is sure to win your heart!
