John Cantwell's CONNIE LOVES JUICE directed by Jim Fall
JOHN CANTWELL's CONNIE LOVES JUICE is a fast-paced, toe-tapping, spoofy, high-camp, clever show will have you grinning from ear to ear and loving every minute. Imagine "Grease", "Roller Boogie", "Saturday Night Fever", "Carrie" and "Rosemary's Baby" edited together by a blind man and you get why audiences, including trailblazers like PET SHOP BOYS, FRED SCHNEIDER of the B-52's, RUPAUL and "Hedwig" creator JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL, love Connie!
"Looking like the lost lovechild of Iggy Pop & Connie Britton, Cantwell's Connie is pure absurdist drag camp on the comic surface, but beneath lays a complex heroine with heart and soul of John Waters' proportions. Baltimore gave us Francine Fishpaw; L.A. gave rise to Connie. If the Los Angeles theatre scene were a Dada-ist heart-shaped box of chocolates, Connie would be the cherry cordial." Xaque Gruber, Huffington Post
Hirsute flashdancer Connie Slocum (JOHN CANTWELL, "Legally Blonde", "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist") is looking for love at the local Roller Disco and she just might find it in the form of superstar skating stud, Juice (L.A. night club legend MARIO DIAZ). But that will only happen over the dead body of ultimate mean girl Gianelli ("Madonnalogues" superstar NADYA GINSBURG), Juice's #1 groupie, in a finale show down straight out of a Brian DePalma film. The show also stars KATIE MALIA ("The Mindy Project") as Connie's sassy cat, Vickie, and is expertly directed by JIM FALL ("Trick", "Lizzie McGuire Movie", "Holiday Engagement").
"The staging is complex, the story is engaging and there are almost always multiple points of action in any given scene (an homage, no doubt, to Brian DePalma's love of the split screen). This is a show that no doubt benefits from multiple viewings, and if you see it this weekend, you will be clamoring for another run." - Brenden Schucart, Frontiers
Being that CONNIE LOVES JUICE has no dialogue, Cantwell uses the backing tunes as narrative to drive his romance-horror-soap opera through dance, film homages, pop culture references and the brilliant photography of DUSTI CUNNINGHAM. It features the choreography of BENJAMIN ALLEN (Groov3), Cantwell, Diaz, as well as cast members KRISTIN CAMPBELL-TAYLOR (Kacey T) and LOU BECKER (Brad/Buster).
