Think Science: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
A hard childhood leaves behind more than just painful memories. Chronic health issues like heart disease, depression, substance abuse, and even cancer have been linked to adverse childhood experiences such as divorce, parental death, abuse, absentee parents, or a family members incarceration. Researchers today are making the connections, and looking for ways to help children along the way before they reach adulthood, such as teaching and building resilience early in life.
At our next Think Science event, we'll talk to three professionals on the front line of research and treatment for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
Guests:
Dr. Colleen Bridger, director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and tri-chair of the South Texas Trauma Informed Care Consortium
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris (joining remotely), California Surgeon General
Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez, director of Salud America!, chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio
Moderator: Bonnie Petrie, Texas Public Radio
This Think Science event is made possible by Baptist Health Foundation, Bihl Haus Arts, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, and UT Health San Antonio's Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics.
