Stories From the Field: The Path to Peace for One Nigerian and His Country
For years, violence between different groups in Nigeria has undermined the growth of its communities and well-being of its people. Building a peaceful and thriving future for families depends on their ability to work together to resolve conflict and counteract the weaponization of social media.
Join us to hear from Tog Gong on how Mercy Corps is using peacekeeping methods and innovations in technology to transform Nigeria, and gain insight into effective communication tools for your own community.
Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. Discussion begins at 6:30 p.m.
Tog Gang's Bio:
Tog Gang is at the forefront of Mercy Corps conflict management and peacebuilding work in Nigeria. He has spent the past six years working with Mercy Corps in conflict-affected communities. Tog has been instrumental in designing programs to support stabilization and peacebuilding efforts against Boko Haram in Northeast Nigeria and assisting local communities to create solutions to address decades-long resource-based conflicts in the Middlebelt region. He specializes in working with communities divided by ethno-political conflicts and has trained thousands of community and religious leaders, government and security officials across sub-Saharan Africa in negotiation and mediation skills.
Today, he is dedicated to reducing youth participation in violence through engaging them in positive initiatives in Northeast and Middle Belt Nigeria. His work includes utilizing traditional peacekeeping mechanisms like working with religious leaders to prevent communal conflicts, but he is also working on the front line of a newer threat: the weaponization of social media.
Tog received his BA and MA in Peace, Conflict, Strategy studies from Kaduna State University in Nigeria and recently added certification from the Harvard Kennedy School on Mastering Negotiation: Building Agreements Across Boundaries.
