Romeo + Juliet is Shakespeare's classic tragedy, and THEATREworks' production, set in the 1990's, promises to be a story for now, relevant and powerful in its portrayal of the "star-crossed" young lovers.
An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father's choice, the handsome Paris. With the help of Juliet's nurse, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day, but Romeo's attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet's own cousin, Tybalt, for which Romeo is banished. The star-crossed lovers take matters into their own hands, and descend into a spiral of desperate choices, actions, and words, ultimately ending in tragedy for all.
This production of Romeo + Juliet is directed by Royea Fox, assisted by Craig Howard, with choreography by Katie Rogers, fight choreography by Elliot Herzer, costumes by April Nice, and set design by Larry Fox and Steven Adkins.
