Setting the Stage: Improving Wellness in our Communities through Diversity and Inclusion
What are the long-term public health implications of providing quality music and arts programs in our schools? How can these programs change the life trajectory of children who would not otherwise have opportunities to participate?

Learn more about the intersection between arts participation and wellness in this lecture presentation by Dr Brian Gibbs, Associate Professor of the OHSU/PSU School of Public Health. See speaker bio below.

The event includes a performance by students in BRAVO Youth Orchestras.  BRAVO launched in 2013 at Rosa Parks School, and now provides after-school programming for over 200 children at 6 priority schools in North Portland. BRAVO partners with Portland Public Schools to rebuild vibrant music programs in schools which have not offered music for years.

BRAVO students have performed at Governor Kate Brown's inauguration, have taken the stage with Black Violin and Hypnotic Brass, and have performed at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall alongside the Oregon Symphony under the direction of Maestro Carlos Kalmar.

All proceeds from this benefit concert support high quality music programs in priority public schools.

Brian K. Gibbs, Ph.D., is an experienced administrator in higher education, spending the last 10 years as a chief diversity officer.  Dr. Gibbs' career spans the fields of academic medicine and health professions including public health and occupational therapy. His professional experience includes leadership positions at Oregon Health and Science University, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the Harvard School of Public Health.
