Clinard at 20: Premiere of Everyday People Everyday Action
Clinard Dance presents the premiere of Everyday People Everyday Action. This premiere is the culmination of a three year long project with Japanese photographer Akito Tsuda, inspired by his photos of Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood in the early 1990's.
Akito's photography animates the disciplines of flamenco, beat-boxing, Son Jarocho, and classical Spanish and Flamenco music, continuously shifting the background to the foreground, past to present. Photos of the neighborhood tailor shop, shoemakers, and a smiling face at the laundry excite flamenco's percussive footwork to join in with the rhythms of the sewing machine, the washers/dyers and the complex sounds taken in while walking down 18th street. Peoples everyday repetitive actions/sounds are the percussive fuel that drive the performance's choreography and tempo. Everyday People Everyday Action is a snapshot, a painting of movements and sounds. It is work that tells a story about everyday people and their everyday actions in service of celebrating and magnifying ordinary and everyday beauty.
This event also celebrates Clinard Dance's 20th anniversary, with additional performances by the company's Flamenco Quartet Project; a post-performance reception, discussion, and community map-making project with Akito Tsuda; and a photo raffle including:
-free dance classes and workshops,
-free tickets to upcoming performances,
-and access to rehearsals in Pilsen in 2020 as part of our upcoming, MacArthur International Connections Fund supported, international exchange with Madrid-based Flamenco group Centro de Danza Elena Andújar.
To participate in the raffle, audience members are invited to contribute one or more of their photographs from their neighborhood, past or present. Each photograph contributed will be exchanged for a raffle ticket.
