Hour of the Wolf
The strangest and most disturbing of the films Bergman shot on the island of Faro, Hour of the Wolf stars Max von Sydow as a haunted painter living in voluntary exile with his wife (Liv Ullmann). When the couple are invited to a nearby castle for dinner, things start to go wrong with a vengeance, as a coven of sinister aristocrats hastens the artists psychological deterioration. This gripping film is charged with a nightmarish power rare in the Bergman canon, and contains dreamlike effects that brilliantly underscore the tales horrific elements.
"A brilliant Gothic fantasy." - Time Out
"This is just too beautiful to exist. Bergman builds an imagery overflow with this horror: there are so many great scenes put together in here: heart-cutting loneliness, desperation & emotion. Liv is so beautiful to watch - she puts together a very soulful individual, lost in the ashes of what remained: dark shadows and silence. Be prepared to transcend." Rafael Zen, Mubi
"Bergmans most bizarre and frightening foray into psychological horror, with remarkable cinematic simulation of social anxiety and sleep deprivation. Von Sydow and Ullmann seem to represent the directors muddied psyche at the mercy of his audience, and the docudrama slant (vengefully) confronts us The glass is shattered, but what do the splinters reflect? - Zachary T., Mubi
