Alice's Gift
"Music was our food"
Alice Herz-Sommer was born in Prague and lived through World War 2 playing piano recitals in the Theresienstadt ghetto. At the time of her death, at 110 years of age, she was the world's oldest Holocaust survivor. Besides having a remarkable story of a cultured upbringing, and a story of endurance and survival, Alice had an extraordinary ability to embrace life and the people she met. In the play, the audience is invited into her living room and given the opportunity to hear some of her stories, her music and her simple but profound wisdom.
This one-act musical play will be performed by Lina de Guevara, with Elisabeth Wagner, pianist, adding the music that was her passion and her unique tool for survival. Directed by Kate Rubin.
Lina was the founder and Artistic Director of Puente Theatre until her retirement in 2011, and is well known to Victoria audiences for her original work with immigrants and bringing a cultural awareness to the city through innovative approaches to theatre. Her most recent work was as director for "River of Time" at the 2016 Uno Festival. Writer/producer Elisabeth Wagner is a pianist and singer. She is the creator of Bell'Arte Music Drama, a unique blending of theatre, music and the literary arts. Kate Rubin has had a longstanding involvement in the Victoria theatre community. Her most recent work as a director is with William Head on Stage (WHoS) and Lawyers on Stage (LOST).
The play integrates the music of Chopin, Beethoven, Bach and others, and is the latest of Elisabeth Wagner's musical plays and productions. The play has been performed several times in Victoria beginning in 2016, as well as in Duncan and Regina. Elisabeth's previous shows were "The Passionate Muse: The Life and Music of Pauline Viardot-Garcia", "The House on Middagh Street", "Earthly Delights: A Day in the Life of Colette", and "Wanderlust: Songs of Travel, Solitude and Homecoming."
From the audience --- "An inspiration on so many levels," "Simply magnificent" "I felt I was having a conversation with Alice", "A poignant, inspiring and uplifting memoir, and a beautifully crafted tribute to an extraordinary woman"
We look forward to sharing the inspiring life and music of Alice Herz-Sommer with you!
The play runs 60 minutes. General seating. There will be a short Question & Answer session following each performance.
