Cave of the Yellow Dog
When Nansal, the oldest daughter of a Mongolian nomad family finds a small dog one day and brings it home, her father refuses to let her keep it, believing that it will bring bad luck. Set far out on the Mongolian plains, the film weaves the small drama of a daughter's dilemma of whether to abandon the dog or defy her father. The Cave of the Yellow Dog tells the story of the age-old bond between man and dog, a bond which experiences a new twist through the eternal cycle of reincarnation in Mongolia. Featuring a real-life family and following much of their daily existence, Byambasuren's follow-up to her Oscar nominated film The Story of the Weeping Camel is a beguiling mix of documentary and drama told with a naturalistic pace that shows the simple beauty inherent in the family's quiet life.
