Newburgh Chamber Music Series Presents the NCM Ensemble
Newburgh Chamber Music Series presents the Newburgh Chamber Music Ensemble (Carole Cowan, violin; Valentina Charlap-Evans, viola; Susan Seligman, cello) in a concert of music by Beethoven and his contemporaries. The ensemble will be joined by Marcia Gates, principal flutist of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, in performances of Beethoven's Serenade, Opus 25 and Mozart's Quartet for Flute & Strings, K. 285.
Principal flutist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic since 1986, Ms. Gates received her music education at the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College. An active chamber musician in the Hudson Valley, she has appeared frequently as soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and with the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra throughout its existence from 1982-1998. Ms. Gates was selected by the renowned flutist Julius Baker as a soloist and prize winner in his master classes. In addition to her active role as a performer in the Hudson Valley, Ms. Gates is an instrumental music teacher in the Hyde Park Central School District.

One of the original members of the Poné Ensemble for New Music, she returns to the Ensemble in 2013 after a leave of absence while she served as Chair of the Department of Music at SUNY-New Paltz. There she is a full professor and Conductor of the College-Youth Symphony. She holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from the Yale University School of Music.
Valentina Charlap-Evans is principal violist of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and a member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet. She is an award-winning fellowship alumna of the Tanglewood Music Center, and has spent numerous summers at the Festival Casals in Puerto Rico. Ms. Charlap-Evans played in the Calgary Philharmonic and Canadian Broadcasting Orchestras, and was principal violist of the Goldovsky Opera Theatre in its final years. She currently plays in the Springfield Symphony, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and the Baroque ensemble La Grande Écurie.
Susan Seligman has been principal cellist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic since 1984. She is a member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet, Innisfree Piano Trio, and Hudson Valley Baroque. Ms. Seligman was favorably reviewed in the New York Times for her performance in works of the late Robert Starer. She is a Lecturer at SUNY New Paltz, teaches cello students at Vassar College, and in her private studio as well. In summer Ms. Seligman is on the faculty of the Chamber Music Institute at Ithaca College.
