Capital Letters
A grey unforgiving Dublin is the scene for this grim tale of people-trafficking. It's the story of Taiwo, who has spent her savings to be brought from an unspecified country to find refuge in the city. On arrival she escapes her traffickers, who work for gangster boss McManus, and finds refuge with Keely, a small-time crook and general loser. Keely is an unlikely Samaritan, but he turns out to be a gentleman. He feeds her with his beloved processed food, helps her learn English, takes the couch while she sleeps in his bed and finds her a job. And we know he really is kind at heart, because he's also very nice to his old Gran, which is always a promising sign. Unfortunately it's soon not all so rosy for Taiwo, as the job, in a "club", has undesirable strings. She makes compromises, adjusts, and continues to send her thoughts to her sister back home in letters, hoping to earn enough to bring her over too. But the underworld and McManus are never far away, and inevitably the temporary idyll is broken and Taiwo is moved up a dangerous notch in the sex industry.
