Invest Locally: A Community Workshop with Michael Shuman
How can Seattle residents begin to invest locally? How can local businesses take advantage of these funds? What new projects might be started? What new partnerships might form?
Come spend a day delving into the local investment revolution from Michael Shuman, one of the nation's foremost authorities on the subject. Whether you are an investor, entrepreneur, consumer, policymaker, or student, you will never think about investment the same way.
Across the country, creative individuals, businesses, and communities have been pioneering new tools to facilitate local investment, including special bank CDs, new-generation cooperatives, crowdfunding, pre-sales, person-to-person internet lending, state banks, revolving loan funds, and self-directed IRAs.
As local stock markets, local mutual funds, and local pension funds begin to form, communities across the country will be able to tap into the coming tidal wave of capital flowing back to small business. Accessing this capital creates jobs and builds thriving communities. Michael Shuman is an economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, and Director of Community Portals for Mission Markets in New York City. He's also a Fellow at Cutting Edge Capital and Post-Carbon Institute, and was a founding board member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). He has authored, coauthored, or edited eight books. His most recent book is "Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Move Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity."
