Sultans of String Christmas Caravan
This performance will be held at the Catherine Cummings Theatre 16 Lincklaen Street, Cazenovia, NY 13035
Celebrate the season with an adventurous musical trip around the world! 2015 JUNO Award nominees Sultans of String perform as a six person show and deliver an exuberant performance featuring originals, world-music inspired classics, and seasonal favorites to warm your heart on a cold winters night. From fiery fiddle tunes to a Caribbean sleigh ride, this surprising and delightful holiday fiesta heats up when Sultans of String bring their signature sound to well known gems such as Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring, The Huron Carol (with gorgeous newly-translated Indigenous lyrics), Little Drummer Boy, a Feliz Navidad ska party, a Turkish twist on Greensleeves, A Charlie Brown Christmas, as well as a Gypsy-jazz inspired Django Christmas, and a Rumba-Flamenca fuelled Jingle Bells. Sultans of String are joined by shimmering guest vocalist Rebecca Campbell (Jane Siberry, Emmylou Harris, Alanis Morissette).
Since forming 10 years ago, Sultans of String have hit #1 across Canada on Top 10 national radio charts, and received multiple awards and accolades, including 2 JUNO Award nominations (Canadas Grammy), 1st place in the ISC (15,000 entries), and 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards out of 8 nominations. Bandleader and violinist Chris McKhool was recently awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for his work in creating community through music.
The genre-hopping nature of the Sultans, who fuse together Celtic, flamenco, Gypsy-jazz, Arabic, Cuban, and South Asian rhythms, has led the band members in the direction of global causes and social justice issues, notes McKhool.
The band has partnered with the United Nations Agency for Refugees in Canada for its current run of shows, an organization that provides shelter, food, water and medical care assistance for refugees around the world. If they want, audiences will be given the opportunity to donate to the organization at a Sultans of String concert, says McKhool.
While the band belts out world music-inspired versions of holiday classics, such as on a number called Turkish Greensleeves and a version of Little Drummer Boy based around an African djembe rhythm, McKhool makes the connection between the holiday season, the power of music and giving back.
The spirit of Christmas is to help others and to give to others and try and make the world a better place. We thought it was a real natural fit to try and remind people what the true spirit of Christmas is about.
