All Souls
Theo van Gogh, who has been described as the Netherland's Michael Moore, was murdered on November 2, 2004 in response to the ideas presented his ten-minute film Submission that dealt with religion and violence against women. The film caused uproar in the Netherlands due to visual elements combining passages from the Koran and transparent veils that alluded to the women's bodies beneath. After his death, an international group of directors united to express their support for tolerance, culminating in the affecting All Souls. Part tribute and part social dialogue, this compilation of 16 short films by 17 directors offers unique views on a common call to understanding human differences. Touching, funny, furious, hopeless and optimistic, the directors' intentions stand to reveal the logic of diversity and multiplicity in a complex world. The 17 vignettes in the film suggest different imaginary episodes surrounding van Gogh's death.
