A Soap
32-year-old ill-tempered Charlotte could have it all, but but doesn't want it. After splitting from her husband, she happens to become the upstairs neighbor of the promiscuous transsexual Ulrik (aka Veronica) who has his own problems to work out. Veronica prefers to keep to herself with her little dog and a romantic soap opera on TV, while Charlotte gets through the nights with one-night stands. An assault, a new bed and some white curtains bring the two of them together and they end up as the main characters of their own turbulent love story. Newcomer Pernille Fischer Christensen deftly uses the enticing conventions of soap opera to create a new kind of romance. All the while a friendly narrator keeps us updated on the latest wrinkles in our characters' lives and their quest for a happy ending. The raw physicality of Trine Dyrholm's fearless performance as Charlotte is beautifully contrasted with David Dencik's reserved, yet determined Ulrik/Veronica.
