Everything's Coming Up Roses: The Music of Jule Styne
Jule Styne personified the brash urban energy of jazz and like George Gershwin, his high voltage lit up the American musical. Hollywood beckoned first, and Styne's collaboration with lyricist Sammy Cahn produced a bundle of hit songs during and after World War II. Then came 23 musicals on Broadway including his thrilling scores for Gypsy ("Together," "Everything's Coming Up Roses") and Funny Girl ("People," Don't Rain on My Parade"). Our concert also features excerpts from Bill Rudman's interviews with a composer revered by Jerome Robbins, who said: "Jule is a kid a mischievous elf who sees the fun and piquancy of everything in life."
