Miracle Play
Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe opens their 29th season with a fresh, new staging of Miracle Play, a two-character drama written and directed by Founding Director Bill Baker.
In Miracle Play, psychotherapist Joe turns to unconventional methods to build trust with his new patient Mary, who believes she is the blessed virgin. As Mary gives Joe insight into her story, he begins to reveal his own. Together, they birth an ever-growing tangle of reality, fantasy, and healing.
As the creator of Miracle Play, Baker draws from his decades of experience in psychotherapeutic work, as well as the traditional genre of miracle plays that were performed between the 12th and 16th centuries. This restaging features two recent graduates from the University of Memphis Department of Theatre & Dance: Akia Miller, who has been a company member of Our Own Voice for several years, and Blake Currie, whose work has recently been seen at Hattiloo Theatre.
Miracle Play runs September 27 through October 5 on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM at Theatreworks located at 2085 Monroe Ave in Overton Square. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. The pay-what-you-can performance is on Saturday, September 28 for tickets purchased at the door.
Created in 1991, the Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe is an organization working to empower people marginalized by mental illness, and striving to engage our community in dialogue about mental health. We use the theatre as a forum for exploring issues that affect the psychological and social well-being of all of us.
