Practical Spirituality: Applying Buddhist Wisdom to Effect Positive Personal, Social, and Political Change
Buddhism is often thought as being synonymous with pacifism. Yet the burning monks of Viet Nam and the political activist monks of Myanmar tell a different story -that Buddhist thought and practice is as engaged in the world as any other thought or practice.
At the same time, such engagement comes from a spiritual awareness that can be free from self-interest or aggression. In this course author Robert Sachs will explain the philosophy and history of Buddhist Mind Training and teach you methods you can use in your own life to address the stresses and strains that can block you from being effective and from actualizing personal, social, and political transformation..
We'll be doing some easy exercises, which can be done in chairs, or on the floor if you wish. Wear loose fitting clothing. Bring a yoga mat, blanket, and/or pillow if you'd like, but this is not strictly necessary.
This is a group participation course.
Robert Sachs has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism for over three decades. He has also been authorized to teach Buddhist mindfulness practices and has authored several books on Buddhism and other related topics. Robert is both a clinical social worker and massage therapist and with his wife, Melanie, co-directs Diamond Way Ayurveda, an therapeutic, education and product company devoted to preserving the bodywork methods of Indian and Tibetan Ayurveda. Robert lives and practices in San Luis Obispo.
