Chandra returns to Detroit to celebrate the release of a new live 7" from Third Man Records! Born in the NYC underground art scene of the early 1980s, she was a child star like no other. Beginning at age 10, Chandra (the daughter of artist Dennis Oppenheim) wrote and recorded the songs from her uniquely intoxicating Transportation EPs while backed up by a band featuring members of famed mutant disco groups The Dance and Model Citizens. With her hypnotic, chanted vocals propelled by infectiously off-kilter grooves, Chandras songs explore the singular fascinations of a post-punk pre-teen in the heart of Hells Kitchen. In the ensuing decades, the Transportation EPs have gone on to be regarded as a rediscovered cult classic, with her song Subways sampled by Australian crate-diggers The Avalanches on their 2016 comeback album, Wildflower. The EPs have now received a deluxe 2LP reissue from Telephone Explosion and Rain Boots Records, while Chandra has reunited with a Toronto-based band featuring members of Teenanger, Tough Age, Bile Sister, New Chance, and Blonde Elvis. Celebrating and reinterpreting the music written in her childhood, she continues her transportation through time.
