Event
A Day with Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky--Sandy Eastman
Sandy Eastman will be providing LLCC members with yet another opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for the San Luis Obispo Symphony concert coming up in October.
The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the afternoon (1pm-3pm) preceding the evening of the performance.
Sandy will present a lecture about the composers and the performers involved in today's orchestra performance. Then you will join Sandy and attend the San Luis Symphony for the dress rehearsal of Classics in the Cohan featuring two interesting pieces for voice and orchestra: Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5
With typical Russian vigor, Prokofiev's Violin Concerto #2 exhibits the incredible depth of emotion that a single violin can conjure. Prokofiev's intensity is brought to light by frequent powerful and vigorous exchanges between the soloist and orchestra. Called "The Dream Violinist" by Gramphone Magazine, Anne Akiko Meyers has garnered critical praise from around the world for her astounding performances. We are delighted that she is opening our season for us.
From its haunting beginning to triumphant end, Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony is a masterpiece. This work is a Russian gem in the orchestral repertoire. Its memorable themes, many of which are simultaneously elegant and majestic, are proof of Tchaikovsky's greatness. It is easy to understand how and why contemporary movie music composers draw from his music.
Anne Akiko Meyers, one of the most sought after concert violinists on the stage today regularly performs as guest soloist with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras and on television and radio. She is a top-selling recording artist who has more than 24 highly acclaimed albums to her credit.
This course will be in two parts. In the morning, there will be a lecture about the composers and about the pieces that are to be played in the rehearsal. In the afternoon, the class, as a group, attends the dress rehearsal of the performance. At the dress rehearsal SLO Symphony conductor Mike Nowak will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and note s on harmony. With Mike's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.
Saturday, October 5, 2013. 9:00 - 11:00 am. for course, followed by symphony dress rehearsal 1:00 - 3:30 pm.
The morning class will be at Ludwig Community Center, Room A. 864 Santa Rosa St. in SLO. The concert rehearsal will be in the Christopher Cohan Center in the PAC at Cal Poly.
