Bohemian Soul - Nationalism Inspired by Folk Music Music by Janacek, Kodaly, Martinu, and Smetana
Rebecca Jackson, artistic director and violin Sarah Rommel, cello; Christine McLeavey Payne, piano
Folk music and art in classical composition possesses a distinct tone a voice for the common man rather than the elite. What might be lacking in refinement is more than made up for by unabated passion. The composers featured in this program pioneered the development of a musical style which became closely identified with their country's aspirations.
Janacek's Violin Sonata and Kodaly's Violin and Cello Duo abound with folk elements. In Martinu's Slovak Variations and Smetana's Piano Trio, illness and tragedy served as inspiration in the development of their nationalistic sound. You might imagine yourself in the square of a Bohemian village on a summer evening listening to the local fiddler, pianist, and cellist extemporize except that all of this music demands virtuoso technical skills far beyond the average village musician. Come hear our chamber musicians weave an artistic tapestry of Eastern European folk tales.
