Arundo donax, the scientific name for reed cane, is used in the craft of making of oboe and bassoon reeds. When cultivated and used for reeds, it can provide beautiful musical sounds for the listener's enjoyment; but Arundo donax is also a potentially dangerous and invasive weed, overrunning water sheds and gardens and obliterating other plants.
We present Arundo donax in its non-aggressive form in this unusual program, featuring all the members of the oboe and bassoon families in this concert of original works and arrangements in various combinations, including piano.
Double reed ensembles have figured prominently throughout the renaissance, baroque, classical and modern ages of music history. This program features music from all these eras, as well as arrangements of romantic period works, to form a delightfully varied program, featuring the oboe, bassoon, and the beautiful sounds of the seldom-heard English horn.
