WINDS of CHANGE: Woodwind Chamber Music of the Mid-20th Century Music by Dahl, Barber, Poulenc, and Haas
Michael Corner, artistic director and clarinet Tyra Gilb, flute; Pam Hakl Economos, oboe; Douglas Brown, bassoon; Daniel Wood, French horn
The odd man out in the chamber music world is the Woodwind Quintet. The different tone colors provided by each of the five instruments make blend and ensemble a challenge, but open up a world of possibilities to creative composers.
The music featured on this program highlights these possibilities. These pieces were all composed within a generation, but the differences in harmonic style, texture, and especially tone color are readily apparent, as are the national styles of Germany, the USA, France and Czechoslovakia.
Featuring varying degrees of 20th century tonality, the works are quite "romantic" in their evocation of time and place, from the indolent torpor of a hot "back east" summer, to a Parisian boulevard, and finally to a Brazilian nightclub (with a Czech accent!). Not coincidentally, there's a lot of humor here. Join us and enjoy just how many wonderful colors of sound 5 instruments can make.
