¡Viva México!
In a rare showcase of female-led Mexican music, Las Estrellas de Vancouver join forces with Los Angeles-based guest singer Melinda Salcido, and the dancers of Nahualli Folklore for an evening of melodic rancheras, intense sones, and romantic boleros.
More than just a concert, this not-to-be-missed experience is a journey through the contributions women have made to the world of mariachi. From the Golden Age of Mexican Cinemabeginning in the 1930s and lasting until the 1960sto Las Adelitas, the first all-female group in Mexico City in the 1940s, the impact of women on Mexican mariachi music has been extraordinary.
Based on the experiences of living musicians, and informed by research of Mariachi Womens Festival producer Dr. Leonor Xóchitl Perez, Las Estrellas de Vancouver (led by founder Michelle Cormier) will perform pieces that capture this evolving musical. Melinda Salcido will perform with the group, while Vancouvers Nahualli Folklore Ensemble highlight the connections between Mexican folk dance (baile, or ballet, folklórico) and mariachi music.
Las Estrellas de Vancouver is made up of several Vancouver musicians, including classical guitarist (and group founder) Michelle Cormier. Other members include violinists Ellen Farrugia, Molly MacKinnon, Begonia Silva, and Sandy Fiddes; double bassist Robyn Reekie; and trumpet players Anita Eccleston and Audrey Patterson.
Vocalist Melinda Salcido is a vocalist and guitarist originally from Fresno, California. Along with singing on Grammy Award-winning albums, she is a member of the powerhouse all-female group Mariachi Nuevo Mujer 2000 and the founder of Fenix de Melinda. The latter is a versatile musical group that performs a fusion of styles with original arrangements.
Nahualli Folkore is a Vancouver group that specializes in the performance of traditional Mexican dance, including zapateado (footwork) technique and skirt twirling, to popular Mexican rhythms. Among their accomplishments, Nahualli dancers shared the Chan Centre stage in 2018 with Mexican Grammy Award winners Lila Downs and Aida Cuevas.
With these accomplished and passionate musicians, singers, and dancers as your guide, let yourself be transported to the cantinas, stages, and barrios of Mexico.
