Asheville is a city that prides itself on its musical heritage, but few people know that in 1927, music legend and "Father of Country Music," Jimmie Rodgers lived and had his radio debut here. On Sunday, September 8th, 2013, WNCmusic will be recognizing Jimmie Rodgers' contribution to Asheville's musical history by celebrating his 106th birthday in Downtown Asheville with a public ceremony unveiling a state historical marker and an evening reception at Asheville Music Hall.
In the afternoon, a public ceremony unveiling a state historical marker will be held downtown with speakers and musicians. Afterwards, the festivities will continue into the evening at Asheville Music Hall where local musicians will perform both covers and originals, while sharing their uniquely Asheville music story. Mayor Bellamy has declared September 8th, 2013 "Jimmie Rodgers Day" and will be speaking at 2pm at the Unveiling Ceremony at the corner of Haywood Street and Battery Park Ave in Historic Downtown Asheville. There will be speakers, street performances and a "Busker's Parade" at 4pm leading into the reception at the Asheville Music Hall where the entire night will be dedicated to the life and legacy of Jimmie Rodgers through film as well as speeches and performances. An emphasis will be on the role musicians have played in developing Asheville's distinct place in history and the economic benefit they have provided to the community leaders through enhancing the tourism and attracting creative individuals for centuries.
