Join local historian and longtime Norwalk Historical Society Board Member, Madeleine Eckert, for the slide lecture "The Sally: The Adventures of a Norwalk Sloop During the American Revolution"!

Experience the true story of the Sally, a Norwalk merchant sloop that was converted into a Continental Sloop of War.  Discover Norwalks maritime importance during this critical period of our nations history.  Hear about the exploits of the Sallys four successive captains, some of her crew and notable passengers as they dealt in espionage, raids against the enemy, and privateering along the treacherous Devils Belt of Long Island Sound.  After the lecture, join Madeleine Eckert for a short walk to Irving Freese Park, the site of embarkation for Nathan Hales spy mission  one of the Sallys famous passengers and voyages!

Madeleine Eckert is a local researcher and historian who has served on the Norwalk Historical Society Board of Directors for a number of years.  She and her husband Ed have given numerous slide lecture presentations in Norwalk and throughout the state. They have also led historic walking tours and cemetery tours around the Historic Norwalk Green, the Mill Hill Graveyard, St. Pauls Graveyard, and Riverside Cemetery.  The Eckerts have done extensive research on the Battle and Burning of Norwalk, Nathan Hale, Black history, and Colonial history in Norwalk. For their in-depth research on Nathan Hale and his spy mission, Ed received the Meritorious Service Medal and Madeleine received the Martha Washington Medal from the CT Society, Sons of the American Revolution.
