AACE Seattle Section September 12th, 2019 Dinner Meeting: 200 Taylor Avenue N. Seattle, WA
PRESENTATION: Using VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) in Project Controls PRESENTERS: Ryan Weinrich and Carlos Cardenas
Ryan Weinrich is a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Manager with Hensel Phelps, responsible for building system coordination and new technology implementation on projects located in the Pacific Northwest. After spending his first few years in the industry as a field engineer working with the trades and gaining valuable experience, he transitioned to a full-time VDC role and began collaborating with design teams, owners, and trade partners to build a wide variety of landmark projects. Ryan firmly believes in the importance of relationships and leveraging all the tools and skills available to the team to ensure exceptional project delivery for everyone involved. Ryan has been working with Building Information Models (BIM) for over fifteen years, beginning with his degree in Construction Management, focused on BIM, at California State University, Chico. He has a passion for finding new ways to bring office and field teams together. Using leading edge technology alongside proven processes has been a cornerstone in the foundation of his career development and remains a focal point in his growth within the construction industry.
Carlos Cardenas is a Lead VDC Engineer at Hensel Phelps with a history of proven, project management results and continued success delivering technology solutions. Before joining Hensel Phelps, Carlos worked for 13 years as a Civil Engineer, Land Survey Technician and CADD Manager. After returning to school to obtain an AAS in BIM / CADD at South Puget Sound Community College, he spent three years as a VDC Engineer at Absher Construction Company. Carlos now leads MEPF coordination at the SeaTac North Satellite Modernization Project. A footy fanatic, Carlos enjoys coaching, playing and watching the sport.
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION Virtual design and construction (VDC) is a process that fully integrates all elements of a project by openly sharing design and construction models among the team, from design through construction. The model can use 3-D elements or can be expanded to a 4-D model that incorporates the construction sequence.
Using the resource-loaded schedule, this model could provide a 3-D illustration of the construction of the project over time. The model can again be expanded to 5-D, which also would include BIM data. This allows the team to quickly access the detailed design specifications and shop drawings of the actual equipment installed directly from the BIM model.
One of the key benefits of using the model during construction is that the contractors can place the 3-D model of the specific equipment being procured to ensure that equipment will fit in place without requiring extensive modifications.
Other best practices for use of this information are to plan for equipment movements and to monitor physical construction versus anticipated construction. Through the process, a schedule-loaded model can be evaluated graphically, side-by-side against a visual of actual project progress, an easy indicator and representation of whether the project is behind, on, or ahead of schedule.
You will also enjoy experiencing VR (Virtual Reality) using Hololens VR Gadget. The 4D BIM Software used to demo the VR Experience is Synchro, https://www.synchroltd.com
