JOSEPHINE COUNTY
Acoustic band Josephine County will appear in concert at Phippsburg Congregational Church on Saturday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Josephine County combines the talents of four accomplished traditional musicians into one musical experience that takes the listener on a journey from the United States to Ireland and back. Comprised of award-winning fiddler and singer Erica Brown Shipman, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Shipman, traditional Irish flute player and singer Hanz Araki and guitarist, bodran player and singer Colleen Raney, the band will offer a program of French Canadian, bluegrass, Irish, country music and more.
Recognized as a Master of Traditional Fiddling by the Maine Arts Commission, Erica Shipman developed an early love of French Canadian music and by age nine was playing and touring New England, Canada, and Louisiana with Maine French Fiddlers. She has become a celebrated fixture on the New England bluegrass scene. In addition to winning numerous fiddle contests in the U.S. and Canada, she has recorded five albums and has opened for such Grammy Award-winning superstars as Dwight Yoakam and bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs.
Playing guitar, mandolin and banjo for the band, Matt Shipman conveys his love of traditional music in his bluegrass, country and Irish styles of playing. Majoring in Traditional Music Studies at Vermont College took him traveling through Nova Scotia, North Carolina and Maine recording and compiling songs and stories. That ultimately culminated as a radio documentary about traditional music in the 21st century. During that time he also attended the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago where he studied various instruments and styles.
One of the most acclaimed Irish musicians in America today, flautist, whistle player, singer, and Juno Award-winner Hanz Araki has been lauded by publications and audiences alike. Three decades of musical exploration into Irish, Scottish, Japanese, and American traditions has yielded his distinct style described by Fatea Magazine as achingly beautiful. Over the years, Araki has released 11 albums. In addition to being a frequent performer at leading festivals, he has also been invited to perform with the Seattle Symphony and for the Japanese Consul General.
Vocalist Colleen Raney has been referred to as "among the best in her genre," by Irish Music Magazine. Born into a family where Irish music and dance were part of the fabric of everyday life, Raney is now considered among the finest interpreters of traditional songs of her generation, bringing authenticity to music from Ireland, Appalachia, Scotland and beyond. Raney has toured extensively, both at home and abroad, including singing for Irish-American supergroup Solas on their farewell tour.
The concert will be held in the historic Phippsburg Congregational Church which is heralded for its wonderful acoustics. Doors open 7 p.m. Refreshments at intermission.
