KING: A FILMED RECORD, co-presented with the Broaklyn Film and Theater Company
"A rich man can never be what he ought to be, until a poor man is what he ought to be." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
On August 28, 2013 citizens from across the country will converge upon our nation's capital to commemorate and celebrate the historic March On Washington which occurred 50 years ago on August 28, 1963.
Join us on the 50th Anniversary of the March On Washington at The New Parkway Theater in Oakland. This special viewing of the remastered version of the 1970 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement.
Produced for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation by Ely Landau, King is an epic document of the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr., from the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott to his assassination in 1968. Rare footage of King's speeches, protests, and arrests are interspersed with scenes of other high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause, punctuated by heartfelt testimonials by some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
There is no voice-over narration; instead, the film uses contemporary film/newsreel and video/television footage to brilliantly convey the boiling indignation of an oppressed people and their revolutionary organizing. Juxtaposed over this footage are dramatic readings by actors Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, Ben Gazzara, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, Paul Newman, Anthony Quinn, Clarence Williams III and Joanne Woodward.
This is a nearly four hour event with intermission and will culminate with a rebroadcast of King's historic speech 50 years ago.
Please note that this August film is part of Karma Cinema month and that 30% of your ticket purchase will go to local nonprofits that you help choose when you attend a screening in August. More info about Karma Cinema is available at www.thenewparkway.com/karmacinema. Come experience the power of generosity!
