Elsewhere (reimagined)
After 10 years of intensive work to establish equitable and thoughtfully scaffolded dance education programs, 2020 UpRise Fest marks the restoration of equal focus within the organization to the professional work of Cora Dance, both by Artistic Director Shannon Hummel and her company and select professional guests and resident artists. The season is anchored by the presentation of three works from Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance - both in-progress and from Hummels emotionally nuanced canon - selected and mounted specifically to elicit discussion important social issues of our time facilitated by those working in social justice and the arts.
Elsewhere (reimagined)- originally performed by the professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance in 2005 at Joyce SoHo - garnered high critical praise, including these words from the Village Voices Tobi Tobias: Hummels Elsewhere is enormously sophisticated, from the nuanced gradations of feeling expressed - the choreography quivers with subtle emotions, like the writing of Virginia Woolf - to stage pictures that remain beautifully calibrated whether the figures are still or running amok. Do I hear anyone suggesting a Bessie nomination? (This) eloquent choreographer gives tough love new meaning. --Tobi Tobias, The Village Voice
The work remains true to the originals deep dive into how we reinvent community in the face of unforeseen mass devastation. Now, in its current form, Elsewhere (reimagined) leans hard into the current border crisis, pushing how confinement forces us to decide whether forgetting or remembering are more crucial to survival. Eloquently performed by youth Apprentices, age 12-23, this re-imagined version is set to a new original score by composer Hans Bilger with costumes designed and constructed by Juliana Marsh. Saturday and Sundays performances will be followed by post-performance facilitated talk-backs that include the artists from Elsewhere (reimagined) as well as organizers from Neighborhood ICE Watch, providing information to the community on knowing your rights as immigrants and as non-immigrants looking out for their neighbors, in the wake of recent ICE raids in Brooklyn.
