Boleros with Miramar at Bossa Bistro
Miramar is a sextet (sometimes joined by a string quaret) that features the male-female singing duo of Rei Alvarez and Laura Ann Singh . They are backed by bandleader Marlysse Simmons who alternates between vintage organs and acoustic piano, guitarist Bryan Vargas and a rotating cast of percussionists including Hector "Coco Barez and Giustino Riccio and bassists Rusty Farmer and Cameron Ralston . Members live between Richmond, VA and Brooklyn, NY with strong ties to Puerto Rico, Chile and Brazil.
Miramar draws its inspiration from the golden age of romantic music, primarily that of the Latin American genre known as the bolero. Made popular by Mexican, Cuban and Puerto Rican combos of the 1950s, the bolero, became synonymous with various slow to medium grooved Caribbean and Latin American rhythms. As its popularity thrived around the globe, the bolero was fused with musical styles to create sub-genres of bolero-rock, jazz and even disco. Miramar explores the tradition through their own interpretations and compositions, further experimenting and expanding the genre.
Their 2016 debut album on Barbès Records featured songs by the legendary Puerto Rican composer, lyricist, renegade and all around superwoman Sylvia Rexach. Spring 2019 saw the release of two original songs on a Daptone Records 45. Recorded live in Brooklyn at House of Soul.
The group has been featured on NPR's Tiny Des and played across the USA including Lincoln Center's Out of Doors, Brooklyn's BRIC JazzFest, NYC's globalFEST, Stanford University, Cleveland Museum of Art, The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage and more. The summer of 2019 will see Miramars debut in France at Lyons Les Nuits de Fourviere Festival.
