Master Class: Walking with the Ancients
No matter how you feel about myths and other traditional stories, youve got to admit: they have staying power. Some have been around for, easily, thousands of yearspassed down through word of mouth before eventually being written down. And after all that, they still grip modern audiences. Yet other tales are so whack-a-doodle they are not tell-able, and were they not captured in a book, they would have dropped off the radar long ago. Why the difference?
In this master class well take a short walk in the shoes of those ancient tellers to explore story crafting that sticks. Well look at how the human brain holds on to information in content and form, and how that, plus time, can result in characters and events that engage or challenge our modern sensibilities.
Well explore how some common metaphors came to be and how they continue to influence the stories we tell today, whether we know it or not. This class will be helpful to those seeking to decode traditional tales, as well as inform the crafting of contemporary stories to increase their relevance to, and staying power with, broader audiences. The workshop is intended for those who have experience in both crafting stories and in performing before live audiences.
