WOMENS VOICES IN INDIAN MYSTICISM
Shruthi Vishwanath, astonishing musician, composer, educator, and wanderer, shares songs, poetry and her personal journey to find and honor the voices of women mystics from India. Shruthi is visiting from Pune, India. From Shruthi: "For some years now, I have been on a journey exploring music, mysticism and composition. For almost two decades, I learned the rigors and nuances of the Carnatic classical tradition, with more training in choral music and abhangs. When it was time to find my own voice, it was Kabir, the 15th century Indian mystic, who moved me and sent me on a beautiful exploration of poetry and folk music, a form that I strive to make my own. My work now lies at the intersection of the classical and the folk, the intellectual and the visceral, and centers around the bhakti and mystic poets of India.
Three years ago, while reading some translations of Marathi abhangs, I was deeply struck by the womens voices in the Warikari tradition of Maharashtra, western India. Realizing that these abhangs were hardly performed in the living practice of the warikaris, I set out to find tunes for these poems. I ended up composing around 30 poems, and re-translating most of them. The album that emerged is now globally available, and the extended translations and music are in a special, limited edition CD".
Shruthi's music has taken her across the length and breadth of India, to festivals and venues like the Kabir Festival of Mumbai, the Jaipur Literature Festival, India Habitat Centre and Kochi Biennale. She has performed in Singapore, Indonesia, Belgium and Austria. Her work on women Warikari voices was supported in 2017-2018 by a grant from the India Foundation for the Arts. For over a decade, she has also been working with children to develop new pedagogy in music and performance. She is currently in the US to attend an Art Omi art residency in NY.
This event is a fundraiser for Rainbow Community School and supports their mission to "develop accomplished, confident, and creative learners who are prepared to be compassionate leaders in building a socially just, spiritually connected, and environmentally sustainable world, all of which is very dear to Shruthis heart. We are fortunate to have Shruthi generously share her talents with our community. Everyone is welcome.
