******* BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their own original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. The series has toured nationally, and has established itself in several other Canadian cities. Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city. www.songwriters.ca ******** ABOUT THE PERFORMERS Sept. 10, 2019 BEN MINK is a critically acclaimed producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, who has brought his signature style and approach to an impressive list of recording collaborations that includes k.d. lang, Rush, Daniel Lanois, Roy Orbison, Elton John, Alison Krauss, Heart, Feist, the Klezmatics, Wynona Judd, Method Man, James Hetfield (Metallica), and many more. WARREN MURFITT & KATE MAIN (MURFITT & MAIN) plumb the depths of country, bluegrass, and western swing, playing home-made songs steeped in the living tradition of roots music. Warren and Kate write original songs that possess a clarity rooted in the musical traditions of rural North America, expressed in a contemporary voice. Heartbreak, honky-tonks, whiskey, unions, religion, the Canadian terrain, and the Berlin Wall are all fair game in their songwriting. Sweet vocal harmonies draw listeners in, adding that high lonesome country sound to the mix. Murfitt & Main make their home in Vancouver. http://murfittandmain.com/
DAVE WILSON (WINTER WILSON) Dave Wilson was born and raised in Sleaford, Lincolnshire (although he did briefly move next door, to Nottinghamshire!). He bought his first (Yamaha) guitar aged 17 and taught himself to play from the David Bowie song book. He started writing songs regularly when he began attending Boston Folk Club in the early 1980s (to make up for not knowing any folk songs) and hasn't looked back since. Dave's songs have been covered by musicians all over the UK and beyond, the best known being Storm Around Tumbledown, which has been recorded by Vin Garbutt and Anthony John Clarke amongst others. The collaboration with Kip Winter has lead to acclaim following their every move; their album "Cutting Free" made the Daily Telegraph's 'Top Ten Folk Albums' list of Summer 2014, and in 2018 they were hand-picked to open for musical legends Fairport Convention on their winter 2018 tour. This coincided with the release of Winter Wilsons eighth studio album, Far Off on the Horizon. The music Dave and Kip make is as sharp in sound as it is observational in message and is delivered with a keen ear for melody and instinctive harmonies.. https://winterwilson.com/
SHARI ULRICH (Host / Producer) Shari's 45-year career from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist has led to 25 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two wins, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year, and the most fun making music a girl could ask for. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 23 years, both locally and nationally. Her June solo release of Back To Shore on Borealis Reocrds has been added to folk charts throughout North America Records to great reviews. www.shariulrich.com
