About Lisandro Baum
Arranger, composer and pianist Lisandro Baum is a leading figure in contemporary Argentine popular music. With Argentine music as a base, Baum's sonic language a mixture of folk, tango, jazz, and European impressionism promotes music as a borderless, multi-dimension bridge connecting all people.
Born in La Plata, Buenos Aires in 1984, Baum began his musical studies at a neighborhood music school when he was six years old. At age ten he enrolled in the Provincial Conservatory of La Plata, specializing in classical piano. After earning his degree he studied Argentine piano music with the renowned pianist and composer Hilda Herrera. He also studied tango with the Emilio Balcarce Orchestra program.
In 2013 Baum focused on his own ensembles and recording projects. The Argentine National Arts Fund commissioned Baums The Climber, including it in the second volume of Piano Argentino (2012). That same year Editions Soldano (France) released his arrangement of Yupanqui and Maldonados To Pray at Night. The newspaper Pagina/12 (Buenos Aires) selected his ensemble Quinteto Bataraz's first album as one of the best tango and folklore recordings of 2014. The album also won the 2015 Gardel Prize in two categories. His composition Wooden won third prize in the tango and folklore category at the 2011-2014 National Awards for Arts & Letters (Argentina). In 2018 Billboard magazine placed his album Fiero in the top ten of new tango recordings, and Batango was nominated for a Latin Grammy® in the Best Arrangement category.
This year Baum releases his first solo album Estuary, highlighting the convergence of the multiple musical currents influencing his recent work.
Baum teaches at many institutions for Argentine music in Buenos Aires. He serves as a professor of arrangement and folklore ensemble at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory in the city of Buenos Aires; professor of piano at the University of San Martíns Creative Space for Tango and Folklore; and on the faculty of the Argentine Pianists program (created by the Secretary of Culture of the Argentina and directed by Maestra Hilda Herrera).
