Songwriter Sessions I: Johnson, Navarro, McCue
Jason McCue is a last minute star addition to this amazing kickoff to our Songwriter Sessions series, featuring the best of singer/songwriters throughout the West. McCue recently won the Sound Off! MoPop contest in Seattle for best young songwriter with his mature lyrics, amazing acoustic guitar technique, and expressive vocals.
Jacob Navarro grew up in the small blue-collar town of Anacortes Washington, in the San Juan Islands. Over the years hes spent as a professional musician, he toured nationally as a duo with banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes, played mandolin on Eddie Vedder's recording Better Days for the Sony Pictures movie Eat Pray Love, and also engineered Jenny Scheinman's solo record Here on Earth, featuring Bill Frisell, Danny Barnes, Robbie Fulks, and Robbie Gjersoeat - at his personal studio . He was a founding member of the folk-rock group Spoonshine and a composer of music for television shows that have aired on the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Spike TV.
Of his newest self produced record Otter House Sketches, Fretboard Journal says "The album is relaxed, beautiful and filled with deft guitar playing".
Dean Johnson is a Seattle singer-songwriter of rare talent, and a frequent Yakima Folklife contributor. His unassuming style belies a level of songcraft you dont often see. He's the Northwest version of late-period Greg Cartwright (or maybe even Townes Van Zandt) in that his lyrics are simple but profound.
