"Orphans, Thieves, and other Unlived Lives" is sourced from our personal research into family dynamics, specifically the mysterious and complex role of Epigenetics in relationship to the origins of our fantasies and desires. The paradoxes inherent in our appetites and fears are revealed in asking: Why do we do what we do, and want what we want? How do the traumas our ancestors endured affect the choices we make? Do they bring us closer towards or further away from our resiliency or the lives we truly imagined we'd be living? What lives are experienced only inside our imaginations, and do we feel we are missing out by not living them...the risk untaken?
Flashes of light usher in haunting past life vignettes and regrets. Felliniesque stand-up comedy and absurdist-crafted psychical-choreography become expressions of both intimacy and estrangement. The performers enter states of reverence, deviance, and bliss, channeling an in-between transitional space that is intentionally left open to possibilities, meanings and imagination for the viewer. The attempt to reconcile with the unseen/our ancestors erodes the self-consciousness of the performer, pushing the limits both spatially and psychologically in the search for our entirety. The audience is offered glimpses of all the lived and unlived lives contained in all of us and the fantasy of our catastrophe.
This cast of 7 intergenerational/interdisciplinary performers have bravely & deeply researched into their own bloodline/"blood memory," their own forbidden desires and examining of their "unlived lives," to bring you a personal and revealing performance-offering that is as serious as it is funny, as chaste as it is hedonist, as boring as it is dynamic. It's just like a day in the life of any one of us. Except for maybe a little more eroticism, ritual and death.
These seven intergenerational performers, along with three of Seattle's top-notch design collaborators, has been exploring movement, theater, and performance cumulatively for over 35 years! Featuring and in collaboration with performers: Carie Esquenazi, Leah Crosby, Jason Franklin, Gina Malvestuto, Hannah Rae, Melissa Sanderson, and Maia Veague. Featuring scenic designer Grant Bowen, composer/sound engineer Bradley Laina, light designer Michelle Mann, and stage manager Heather Mayhew!
We look forward to sharing this work SO long in the making...to seeing you seeing us seeing you!
