Holidays South of the Danube! Local choirs Dunava and Dave & the Dalmatians present a concert of seasonal songs from southern and eastern Europe. The program will feature lush harmonies and strident dissonance, dance tunes and mournful ballads. Some songs are hundreds of years old and have been passed on through oral tradition, while others are recent compositions in the unique style of specific regions. The lyrics celebrate home, family, and love, and also lament hardship and loss. The expressive music speaks for itself and communicates with listeners all over the world across language boundaries.
Dunava ("the Danube") is Seattle's premier Balkan women's choir, made up of singers with broad musical and performance experience and a passion for intricate harmonies and varying vocal technique. Dunava is dedicated to studying and performing traditional folk songs from Eastern Europe with respect and authenticity, and introducing audiences to these beautiful vocal traditions and songs.
Celebrating their 25th year, Dave and the Dalmatians sing multi-part acapella songs from the Balkans (principally, the Dalmatian coast of Croatia), various Mediterranean islands, Italy, Wales, Russia, Armenia, and Georgia. They have released three CDs and are recording a fourth.
