Ben Cassara: "The Doris Day Project"
Doris Day was a national treasure, an iconic figure in film, music and as an activist. As a young boy, I had a major crush on her and to this day still inspired by her artistic legacy. With her passing at the age of 97 this past Spring, I felt moved to honor her by sharing a bit of her life story thru her music. We are very pleased to offer The Doris Day Project to you which will present Day's songs in a modern jazz setting. Backed by pianist Josh Richman, bassist John Sims and sax player Adam Hutchenson, the evening will showcase inventive, new arrangements of classic tunes from Day's repertoire sprinkled with tales about the star.
Born and raised in NYC, Ben Cassara began singing around the family piano and in school and church choirs. He tried his hand at theater and after college performed in a number of Off-Off Broadway productions. However, music was his passion and it didn't take him long to start working in piano bars all around the city. After a time, Cassara realized hed prefer to be a frontman and started studying with jazz vocal coach, Carol Fredette and worked around the city with jazz musicians. In 2013 Cassara released his 1st CD, Sister Moon to great reviews. In 2014 he debuted his Bobby Troup Project at Jazz at the Kitano and has since performed it at numerous venues. He regularly performs at Jazz at the Kitano in NYC and at Shanghai Jazz and Trumpets in NJ. Ben has also performed at the Midday Jazz Series at St. Peters Church, Pangea, The Metropolitan Room, Something Jazz, Joe's Pub, The Pax Theater, The Jazz Brunch at North Square, Capri and for Project 142.
"One of the most engaging vocalists around, always in evidence a strong jazz influence in his vocalizing and choice of material." Joe Lang, Jersey Jazz
"One jazz singer for whom words aren't just syllables on which to hang notes, they're the very center of the song." Mark Dundas Wood, Bistro Awards.com
"Cassara.gives a song a unique distinctive flavor all its own...incredibly intimate." Will Friedwald, Music Critic and Author
