Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
In 1880 Scotland, Professor Sir Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason), a geologist at the University of Edinburgh, is given a piece of volcanic rock by his admiring student, Alexander Alec McEwan (Pat Boone). The rock is unusually heavy. Upon further inspection, Lindenbrook discovers it bears a cryptic inscription from long-lost Icelandic scientist, Arne Saknussemm. The scientist claims to have found a passage to the center of the earth inside an extinct Icelandic volcano. Lindenbrook and McEwan set out to find it.
They are soon joined by a young widow, Carla Goteborg (Arlene Dahl). Her scientist-husband was recently murdered. Icelander Hans Belker and his duck Gertrude round out the expedition as the quartet descends into the bowels of the earth.
Following marks left by Saknussemm, the expedition finds fantastic creatures, exotic plants, the Lost City of Atlantis, and many dangers. They also encounter a foe who will stop at nothing to beat them to the earths center.
The ultimate question remains: What will they do if they make it?
Based on the novel by Jules Vernes.
Starring James Mason, Pat Boone, and Arlene Dahl.
