Hallifax & Jeffrey play Berlin School Music
After the glory days of the viol in the English and French courts, this king of instruments had at least one more place in the sun: in Germany at the court of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (and a lot of generic germanic titles too pompous to waste time other on here). In Berlin, Frederick, who possessed a famously backward-looking taste in music, employed a specialist viol player, Ludwig Christian Hesse, the last viol virtuoso in Europe. Frederick also maintained a hofkapelle of fine musicians who composed (among many other chamber pieces) lovely and challenging music for Hesse, including Christoph Schaffrath (whose Sonata for two viols figures largely in this program). One assumes that King Frederick played one of the parts, as he was an enthusiastic student of the viol, and was taught by Hesse. The fine Anonymous Sonata for two viols (one of a set of six) which balances this program seems to us to fit right in with this repertoire, although experts' guesses as to the composer range from Forqueray to Abel, as well.
The Barefoot House Band, Hallifax & Jeffrey, have been working at this (for them) new repertoire for a while, and the time has come for it to be unveiled. This is not your typical "early music" - type viol music, but please don't call it neo-classical (how would you like to be called a neo - anything?). To the musicians of its day it was contemporary. To us, that's description enough
There will be snax. It's May Day, so bring your own Maypole!
