Goodbye, South, Goodbye
One of the top three films of the 1990s, according to the Cahiers du Cinema.
A stylish riff on the gangster genre, re-tooled for a modern Taiwanese context, director Hou Hsiao-hsien's film profiles the lives of a group of crooks with dreams of surfing the Taiwanese economic miracleif only they can figure out how. A comedy of inertia, with overwrought scheming glacially leading to hilariously bungled schemes, the almost non-starting plot is a hilarious showcase of behaviors and suggests a larger national story of haphazard economic experience.
"An existential documentation of the vapid and languid lives of various people outside the law in Taiwan. Subtle expressions of urban alienation and low-key long takes are what Hou Hsiao Hsien does best, and Goodbye South, Goodbye is graced thoroughly with the application of his masterful touches." - Law, Mubi
"...an understated showcase for Hous sophisticated storytelling." - Reverse Shot
"...gritty and uncompromising in its treatment. Stylistically, it is similar to Martin Scorseses more intimate and raw movies like Mean Streets (1973)" - Eternality Tan
