Profs & Pints: The Grimms' Witches
Profs and Pints presents: The Grimms' Witches, with Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, former instructors at The Ohio State University and co-founders of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
Once upon a time, there was a witch. She was beautiful and powerful. She was frightening and dangerous. She was everything people feared--and everything they wanted to be.
Join Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, who previously gave a fantastic Profs and Pints talk on fairies, as they explore the powerful, endlessly versatile figure of the witch through the folkloric medium of the fairy tale.
They will discuss the ways in which the Grimms witches possess unique relationships to agency, community, and nature by discussing five different witches that appear in five different fairy tales, some familiar and others obscure: Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Spinners, Frau Trude, and All Kinds of Fur. For each, they will identify the aspect of the witch that is most relevant to the tale. You'll get to know the "Witch as Mother, Witch as Monster, Witch as Helper, Witch as Lover, and Witch as Princess.
By illuminating different aspects of the figure of the witch as she appears in the Grimms tales, Dr. Cleto and Dr. Warman will demonstrate the versatility, multiplicity, and power that characterizes the witch of folklore, even within a single, albeit extremely influential, collection of stories. A rich repository of education and inspiration, the witch intrigues and enchants us, inviting us to let down our hair, jump into her flames, and take a bite of her apple. You'll be spellbound by this discussion by two scholars who teach, lecture, and publish on fairy tales, legends, supernatural folklore, Gothic literature, and more.
