Jeezy's Juke Joint
Jeezys Juke Joint was conceived out of a desire to create a space for black performers to be seen and celebrated. After becoming enchanted with burlesque in 2009, with the artists and their stories, the glitz and glamour, and the freedom that came with creating her own artistic voice, Jeez Loueez began to seek out other performers of color. What she found was a lack of visibility. She knew of their existence but where were the inspirational trailblazers? How could she ensure that the black community could see their experiences reflected on burlesque stages?
The answer was what Quilt Magazine has called, the most important show of the year Jeezys Juke Joint. What started off as a blog featuring black performers, has transformed into a live weekend extravaganza. Over the past six years Jeez Loueez has produced and curated an astonishingly thoughtful line up of glamour, storytelling, and thought-provoking pieces.
Jeezys Juke Joint is more than just a show. It is an experience that creates a safe space for marginalized performers to share their voices, all while cultivating community, preserving and creating history, and ensuring that burlesque is accessible to the black community. It is a jump, jiving, foot stomping good time that leaves everyone that witnesses it transformed.
