Eid al-Fitr: Vegan Moroccan Cuisine at the End of Ramadan
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Fasting expresses Muslim community values: Empathy for the poor, charity, worship, steadfastness, and patience. After the end of Ramadan*, the community holds a big, welcoming Eid celebration.
Sponsored by Whittier Backyard Farms, and held at Plant Based Parties, our all-vegan Eid al-Fitr prix fixe dinner reinterprets traditional Moroccan cuisine with five salads, butternut pigeon pie, eggplant lamb tagine, and a French plum tart.
We'll dine under the stars on this beautiful August evening.
All-Vegan Menu:
-- Guest of Honor Five Salad Plate -- A traditional plate with five salads served on special occasions to honored guests; includes eggplant zaalouk, quinoa tabbouleh, and three cold vinaigrette salads
-- Butternut Bastilla Layered Pigeon Pie -- Morocco's famously rich layered pigeon pie in a light, flaky pastry shell** is reinvented with savory butternut pigeon, spiced squash omelet stuffing, and a crunchy topping of fried cinnamon almonds
-- Eggplant Lamb Tagine with Saffron, Figs and Dates -- Served on quinoa with spicy house harissa and sliced oranges on the side
-- French Plum Tart with Creme Patissiere -- French fruit tarts are popular in Morocco; in our reboot, sliced backyard plums are baked on cashew creme patissiere in a sweet pastry shell** with wild blackberry glaze
Craft project: Henna tattoos, or mehndi, are a fun way to celebrate special days in many Muslim and Hindu cultures. Men, women, and children can wear mehndi.
*Verse 183 of the Quran Surah al-Baqarat says the purpose of the fast is to develop a quality called Taqwa: A cognizance of God's awareness of the actions you perform in your daily life. The practices of Ramadan are between the person fasting and Allah.
